Abraham Merchant is a real estate developer and a multi-branded restaurant owner.
Merchant is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Merchant Hospitality Inc., located in Manhattan, New York. Merchant founded the company in 1986.
Merchants Hospitality Inc. is a full service hospitality company with expertise in investment, development, ownership and management of real estate. Merchants Hospitality Inc. and its principals, have owned, operated and developed some of the most luxurious destinations in the Country and Caribbean. Properties have included hotels, residential condominiums, office buildings and restaurants such as 485 Fifth Avenue, currently home to the Hyatt Andaz, 260 Park Avenue South Luxury Condominium, The Westin Aruba Hotel & Resort, Philippe Chow Restaurant on Madison Avenue, NYC’s famous Pier 15 at South Street Seaport, 350 Madison Avenue, Merchants River House on the Hudson River, and award-winning SouthWestNY. The properties have a broad national appeal and as a result, Merchant has been afforded with significant opportunities to expand and generate favorable returns.
Merchant serves as Managing Director to each restaurant and Merchants Hospitality’s affiliated properties. Merchant has opened and operated properties over the last twenty-five years, continuing to develop multiple real estate and hospitality assets. Merchant leads the experienced management team and a staff of over 100 employees.
Merchant is credited with helping to restore confidence and rebuilding the Downtown Manhattan community after September 11, 2001 and then again after Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and played an integral part in the rebuilding process.
Some of Merchant’s earlier successes include Anaconda, Art Bar & Lounge, Chicago Blues, Merchants NY Chelsea, Merchants NY Columbus Ave, Merchants NY Cigar Bar, Southwest NY, and Merchants Café.
In the early 1980’s, Merchant served as Regional Director for Riese Restaurants and helped create $200 million in revenues for one of the largest restaurant, retail, and real estate management companies in New York City.
Merchant has co-developed properties and restaurants in New York City and Miami in partnership or association with Brookfield Properties, The New York City Economic Development Committee, and other major institutional and governmental groups.
Merchant lives in Manhattan with his wife, Lynn and their son.
